My teaching focuses on helping artists reconnect with the visual excitement that drives their work. I use exercises to prompt artistic exploration, while weaving in the strong foundational skills of value and design. With over 30 years of teaching—much of it outdoors—I bring a plein air approach that emphasises observation, adaptability, and working directly from life. In this workshop, I’ll offer full demonstrations in oil, along with watercolour studies and provide easel-side individual coaching throughout the week.
All media are welcome, allowing each artist to work in the way that suits them best. Each session combines focused instruction with ample time to paint, giving participants the chance to apply ideas immediately, experiment, and solve problems in real time. This balance creates an engaging, productive environment where artists build skill, sharpen their eye, and develop a more confident, personal direction in their work.
Students will learn how to apply wet layers and non-toxic (solvent-free) ways to use oil paints. This workshop is geared to oil painters, but students may work in any media and do not need both oil and watercolour to participate. Oil painters, please note that this workshop will be run SOLVENT-FREE. Christine will teach you how to paint without solvent.
This workshop is geared to intermediate and advanced artists. Motivated beginners ready to level up are welcome. All artists should be familiar with their equipment prior to the workshop.
Christine Lashley is an American artist known for her vibrant, expressive work in oil and watercolour. Grounded in direct observation, her paintings often begin outdoors, where changing light and atmosphere inform a responsive, intuitive approach that is later developed in the studio. Blending realism with abstraction, her work explores the intersection of place, memory, and emotion.
Her work is held in museum and corporate collections and she has taught workshops worldwide for over 30 years. Christine holds a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis and has also studied in Paris. Alongside her studio practice, she teaches and mentors artists through LashelyArtClass.com, her online platform offering in-depth courses on painting, composition, and process.
