10th - 14th August 2026
5 Day part 'En Plein Air' - part Studio Workshop
This workshop is an overall experience. You will be inspired by the surroundings, the landscape and the animals!
The emphasis of this workshop is in creating fine art from animal subjects. The best paintings are emotional and breathe life. This is not impossible. The instructor uses basic principles through projects that emphasize value and color. Drawing is not onerous once you know how to see. Edges? They will come naturally.

The reality is most artists paint animals from photos. The trick is in pairing life experience with it. Dogs are a convenient way to start in the studio but we will progress outside the boundaries of the studio. Gathering color notes and observing the structure of whatever animal we can find. Sheep and horses come to mind in the beautiful countryside of Yorkshire. The week will always be about live animals. You will venture out of the studio to gather information while learning compositional techniques for adding animals to the landscape.
Photos carry you just so far. Working from life does just that – puts life into your paintings. You see in a whole new way. Instructor will demo taking the mystery out of the process. It’s simpler than you think. We always go back into the comfort of the studio to convert our studies and color notes into something that will be a useful tool beyond the workshop. Instructor is known for her ability to connect one on one with students.
We talk, we paint, we learn.
Come if you want to jump to the next level whether for your own pleasure, a gallery or commission work.

'Having learned to paint from life, bringing live dogs and horses into her workshops was a natural step. This provides a spark of inspiration along with valuable information and maybe just a bit of chaos!'
